This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Engineer, Energy and Design Services Division, Architecture and Preservation Branch. The selectee will be responsible for developing designs and furnishings of interior spaces, including historically sensitive areas within the Capitol Complex.

The individual selected for this position will perform the following duties:
- Carries out complex interior design projects for Members of Congress, Congressional committees, the Supreme Court and AOC jurisdictions and divisions.
- Provides expertise and technical direction of all intra-agency interior design projects from inception to completion.
- Prepares purchase specifications and justifications for interior design materials.
- Creates and develops complete interior designs, including complex features utilizing the latest interior design and construction techniques.
- Develops design plans, considering such factors as function, user needs, energy use, building codes, durability and life cycle costs, effective space planning, aesthetics and economics.
- Prepares complete interior design drawings and ensures compliance with AOC criteria and needs of the project.
- Provides information as to the criteria for structural, mechanical and electrical design and writes interior architectural specifications and design analysis reports.
- Prepares preliminary and final interior design plans for building structures, including finishes, textures, colors, as well as interior and exterior color boards.
- Prepares complete comprehensive interior design packages to accompany building design, including detailed furnishings and equipment layouts and schedules encompassing power and communication requirements, type and functional needs, quantities, cost estimates, procurement documents and placement plans.
- Serves as interior designer on the Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) system; Trains other interior designers in the use of the CADD equipment for accomplishing computer aided designs.
- Participates in architect-engineer (A/E) pre-selection process; Reviews designs prepared by A/E firms.
- During construction period, resolves other interior architectural problems that arise and oversees installation phase and post-occupancy issues.
- Confers with architects/engineers during progress of the work to ensure compliance with directives.
- Plans, designs and reviews new and/or extension, conversion or modernization of existing interiors of buildings or facilities.
- Provides expert advice to clients on the selection and design of essential items of equipment and furnishings to ensure maximum durability for longevity, aesthetic value, life expectancy, functional space arrangements, flow planning, etc.
13 – Full Performance Level is GS-13.

To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
Candidates for the GS-13 grade level must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service
Specialized experience for this position must demonstrate the following:
- Comprehensive knowledge of and experience with professional interior design concepts, principles, and practices to accomplish the full range of duties concerned with planning, design, renovation and construction of building interiors.
- Developing complete design plans, drawings, and specifications for new and/or existing interior design projects.
- Performing interior space planning and design analysis.
- Applying technical knowledge and expertise of Computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to create and develop complete interior designs.
